Mali army regains control in key areas from armed groups

The Malian Armed Forces have declared a decisive shift in the conflict, reasserting their authority over regions previously contested by armed factions, including the National Movement for the Liberation of Azawad (MNLA) in the north and the Support Group for Islam and Muslims (GSIM), an Al-Qaeda-affiliated group, in central and southern Mali.

In an official statement, the Malian Armed Forces confirmed that intense clashes persisted on Sunday near Anifif, located 110 kilometers southwest of Kidal, following the deployment of additional troops and equipment to the MNLA.

The statement emphasized the resilience of Malian troops, stating: « Facing renewed pressure, our units engaged in combat with unwavering determination, sustaining operations throughout the day with unwavering discipline and professionalism. »

Reaffirming their commitment to safeguarding national sovereignty, the military reassured the public of their full confidence in the Armed Forces’ ability to protect civilians, defend territorial integrity, and neutralize hostile forces.

Meanwhile, the MNLA’s spokesperson, Mohamed Mouloud Ramadan, had earlier claimed control over Anfif, citing a resurgence in hostilities. He also dismissed rumors of the group’s leader, Mbarek Ag Akli, being killed, asserting that the commander remains actively involved in directing military operations across northern Mali.
