Senegal assembly reacts to constitutional council ruling

In a decisive move, the President of Senegal’s National Assembly, Ousmane Sonko, has acknowledged the Constitutional Council’s ruling invalidating the constitutional reform law passed by lawmakers. Addressing the nation via a public statement, the leader of the Pastef party emphasized that the decision rendered by the « Seven Sages » is binding on all institutions and citizens alike.

« Beyond the debates and interpretations that may arise from the reasoning behind this decision, one undeniable truth remains: this ruling must be respected by everyone. Case closed, » Sonko declared in his statement.

The head of the legislature underscored the importance of institutional roles, asserting that when institutions function within their designated frameworks, crises can be prevented. « This moment serves as a reminder that institutional balance is the cornerstone of stability, » he noted.

Reaffirming the Assembly’s commitment to its duties, Sonko vowed to continue legislative work without hesitation. « The National Assembly will carry out its mandate unfailingly, ensuring laws are enacted or rejected in the best interest of the Senegalese people, » he affirmed.
