Patrice Talon sworn in as Senate President in Bénin

Porto-Novo, Bénin — Patrice Talon, former President of the Republic of Bénin, has been elected President of the newly formed Senate, marking a significant moment in the country’s political landscape. In his first address to the senators gathered at the Palais des Gouverneurs, Talon emphasized unity, consensus, and shared responsibility as the foundation for the Senate’s future work.

Senate inauguration and leadership transition

Two months after concluding his presidential mandate, Patrice Talon has returned to an official role, this time leading the Senate, the upper chamber of Bénin’s Parliament. The election, held on August 6, 2026, saw Talon assume the presidency alongside Louis Vlavonou as Vice-President and Alassane Seidou as Rapporteur, each elected for a five-year term.

A vision for unity and stability

In his inaugural speech, Talon expressed gratitude to his colleagues for their trust and called for the Senate to function as a united family, guided by consensus and collective responsibility. He highlighted the positive atmosphere that characterized the election process, stating, “The exceptional climate has transcended our differences and fostered a spirit of collaboration.”
