Sevilla: a rebuilding job that turned into real momentum
Finishing 13th last term and flirting with relegation for months, Sevilla have rewritten their own story. Luis García Plaza has squeezed four victories out of six matchdays, and most of them arrived by the tightest possible margin — 1-0 against Valencia, then 1-0 away at Deportivo La Coruña. That upturn owes much to a transfer window pushed through at full speed. Youssouf Fofana, previously of Milan, brings experience to midfield, where Jon Guridi and Giorgi Kochorashvili also arrived. At the back, Juan Iglesias quickly nailed down the right flank and even delivered the winner against Valencia. Further forward, former Saint-Étienne striker Lucas Stassin and Félix Correia, on loan from Lille, add pace and depth. The dressing room did lose familiar faces: César Azpilicueta retired, while goalkeeper Ørjan Nyland, Nemanja Gudelj, Juanlu and Akor Adams all moved on, as did Neal Maupay, who returned to Marseille. With Robert Lewandowski gone to MLS, Deco spent more than 170 million euros. Anthony Gordon made an instant impact on the left with four assists, while Karim Adeyemi and Gabriel Jesus widened the attacking options. Rodri, the 2024 Ballon d’Or winner, adds another dimension in midfield, and João Cancelo, now signed permanently, also scored on Wednesday.
