new pediatric unit opens in Koutiala, Mali to fight child mortality

Explore the transformation of pediatric care in Koutiala, Mali, where a state-of-the-art facility now serves thousands of children annually.

Since 2009, Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) has operated a pediatric program in Koutiala, southern Mali, to combat high child mortality rates through prevention and treatment. Recognizing the need for enhanced care, MSF initiated construction of a new pediatric unit in Koutiala—a project that spanned over a year. Malaria remains a leading cause of child mortality in the region, often leading to malnutrition as children lose their appetite. Malnourished children, in turn, become vulnerable to severe illnesses, creating a dangerous cycle. To address this, MSF provides free, high-quality hospital care for children with critical conditions and extends pediatric services and healthcare access to villages throughout Koutiala District to prevent complications.

The new pediatric unit consolidates all patient care on a single, modernized site. During peak malaria season—typically from June to December, influenced by rainfall—and the food shortage period known as ‘déficit alimentaire’ in October/November, up to 1,000 children are admitted to the pediatric and malnutrition wards at Koutiala Hospital, supported by MSF.

In Episode 2, follow Luca, accompanied by Marie Hortense, MSF’s medical coordinator in Koutiala, and Hyppolite, deputy project coordinator, as they visit the Annex—a facility designed to handle surges in patient numbers.

In Episode 3, join Luca and Ana, the Construction Project Coordinator, as they tour the construction site to envision the final look of the new pediatric unit.

Episode 4 reveals the long-awaited unveiling of the new hospital. Accompanied by Nicolas and Albert, discover how this modern facility improves patient care and streamlines medical services for better outcomes.

In the final episode, Nicolas travels to Konséguéla, approximately 50 kilometers from Koutiala, where MSF supports a local health center.
