Following France’s national holiday, French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu has commenced a pivotal two-day official visit to Morocco. This significant trip aims to rejuvenate and redefine bilateral relations between the two nations. The visit comes after King Mohammed VI conveyed a message to President Emmanuel Macron, emphasizing that France and Morocco have embarked on a historic phase, aspiring to establish their exceptional partnership as a model for future cooperation. For his inaugural official journey to the Kingdom since assuming office in 2025, Sébastien Lecornu is accompanied by a substantial delegation, including a dozen ministers such as Jean-Noël Barrot for Foreign Affairs and Laurent Nunez for Internal Affairs. The French head of government is scheduled for a private discussion with his Moroccan counterpart, Aziz Akhannouch, before co-chairing a high-level meeting. This crucial encounter is anticipated to result in the signing of multiple bilateral agreements, spanning vital sectors including economy, immigration, justice, and defense.

Economically, discussions are centered on fostering co-development initiatives across Africa. Leveraging Morocco’s established position as a key logistical and financial hub, businesses from both countries are poised to forge joint ventures targeting the expansive African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). The Kingdom’s robust commercial dynamism, evidenced by a 20.7% surge in intra-African exports in 2025, coupled with its integration into the Pan-African Payment and Settlement System (PAPSS), provides a secure environment for investments. Furthermore, amid escalating global geopolitical tensions, particularly concerning the Strait of Hormuz, Morocco’s strategic port infrastructures are emerging as highly viable bypass routes for critical logistical flows connecting Asia, Europe, and Africa.

Beyond economic collaboration and the concept of industrial co-production, regional security remains an paramount concern for both Paris and Rabat. The two capitals share significant apprehensions regarding the persistent instability across the Sahel region, characterized by porous borders and a resurgence of terrorist threats. By intensifying their security and migratory coordination, France and Morocco are committed to giving tangible substance to this exceptional partnership, which both diplomatic efforts are now striving to elevate to new heights.
