Sonko warns Faye over possible delay to 2027 local polls

During a Dakar Arena rally marking the launch of his party’s campaign for the upcoming local elections, Ousmane Sonko, leader of PASTEF, made it clear that his movement would oppose any attempt to postpone the vote.

The declaration came as the Senegalese opposition leader addressed a packed hall of party officials and supporters, reaffirming his stance with a firm statement: « PASTEF will not accept a postponement of the local elections. We are ready »*. The crowd responded with loud cheers and applause.

Sonko went on to stress that any delay to the electoral process must follow the legal framework set by the country’s institutions. « In Senegal, an election cannot be postponed without first going through the National Assembly », he pointed out, urging authorities to take the necessary steps to ensure the vote proceeds as scheduled.

He also took aim at delays in signing the official decree, warning the administration: « Let the president sign the decree—delaying tactics won’t resolve anything ».
