In Senegal, the political split between President Bassirou Diomaye Faye and his former ally, Ousmane Sonko, leader of the ruling Pastef party, has now been formally declared. 

The Senegalese head of state officially inaugurated his own political party this past Saturday. 

Once a prominent figure within Pastef, the party led by Ousmane Sonko, Bassirou Diomaye Faye has now founded the Parti des Patriotes Républicains, formalizing a division that has been brewing for several months. 

Amidst a significant national debt crisis, this move marks the opening of a new chapter in the struggle for political influence.

In the weeks leading up to this official launch, a growing number of Pastef officials, including various regional leaders and members of its youth wing, had already departed the party to align themselves with President Faye’s emerging faction. Additionally, several members from the opposition party, “Alliance pour la République,” have also transitioned to support Faye’s new political endeavor.

President Faye and Ousmane Sonko initially ascended to power together in 2024, campaigning under the banner of Pastef, an acronym for “Patriotes Africains du Sénégal pour le Travail, l’Éthique et la Fraternité.”

However, the alliance between Faye and Sonko, which was instrumental in their 2024 presidential election victory, has fractured. This breakdown stems from fundamental disagreements over critical policy decisions, particularly regarding how to approach negotiations with the International Monetary Fund for a loan program during a period of severe national debt crisis.

The establishment of President Faye’s new party foreshadows an intense political rivalry between the erstwhile allies. This contest is anticipated to unfold significantly during the local elections in 2027 and could profoundly shape the landscape for the 2029 presidential campaign in Senegal.
