Sénégal: why the exodus of leaders from Pastef is shaking the party
The mass departure of key figures from Pastef, including long-standing supporters of Ousmane Sonko, marks a deepening rift within Senegal’s political landscape following the establishment of a new presidential party.
From isolated departures to a full-blown hemorrhage
What began as scattered resignations has rapidly escalated into an unprecedented exodus. Veteran party cadres, rising young officials, and directors of public agencies have all joined the growing list of those leaving Pastef. The accelerating pace of departures points to a single, unmistakable conclusion: the irreparable breakdown between President Bassirou Diomaye Faye and National Assembly Speaker Ousmane Sonko.
Once united by the historic March 2024 political shift that brought them to power, the two men now stand on opposing sides of a widening chasm. Their alliance, once hailed as the cornerstone of Senegal’s political renewal, suffered a definitive blow in May 2026 with the dismissal of Ousmane Sonko from the Prime Minister’s office—a move that capped months of simmering tensions between the Presidency and the government. Though Sonko retained his grip on the party leadership after assuming his current role in the National Assembly, Faye moved swiftly to consolidate control over the state apparatus.
Public disputes and constitutional moves deepen the divide
The first major sign of this rupture came in early June when Minister Moussa Bala Fofana resigned from his Urbanism portfolio—his third term in the same ministry—just days after Ousmane Sonko publicly criticized ministers for failing to align with party directives. The outgoing minister insisted his resignation was his own decision, not dictated by the President, and addressed his former mentor with deference.
On July 3, President Faye took the final step toward formalizing the split by announcing the creation of a new presidential party aimed at unifying his political base. The move was widely interpreted as a definitive break from Pastef, the party that originally propelled him to power. In parallel, the coalition “Diomaye Président” has been mobilizing on the ground, actively seeking to absorb incoming supporters.
