Niger’s economic crisis: a generation’s struggle for survival

As evening descends upon the suburbs of Zinder, located in southeastern Niger, Rabiatou, a 29-year-old merchant, begins to pack up her market stall. With her remaining collection of second-hand clothes balanced carefully on her head, she starts her journey home. Her day’s sales were sparse; she managed to sell only one item for 1,000 F CFA, half of which was immediately allocated to transportation expenses. Arriving at her residence, the baby strapped to her back coos with delight as it spots her three other children.
