Ceuta border tensions: calls for de-escalation between Morocco and Spain

For over a week, online discussions have circulated, suggesting that the Ceuta crossing between Morocco and Spain would open this Saturday, August 15. However, authorities from both nations have issued statements confirming new measures are now in effect to prevent any new surge of migrants.

These preventative steps follow a significant incident in late July, when approximately 72,000 individuals entered Spain through Ceuta. Nearly all of these migrants were subsequently returned to Moroccan territory.

Addressing the ongoing situation, Patrick Martin-Genier, a lecturer at Sciences Po, underscored the importance of easing tensions. “Today, there are difficulties between Morocco and Spain; it would be prudent to de-escalate the situation on both sides,” Martin-Genier advised, emphasizing the need for calm and constructive dialogue.
