Cameroon government denies power vacuum as president biya remains in switzerland

In a firm response to circulating rumors, Cameroon’s government has categorically denied any power vacuum, affirming that President Paul Biya remains alive and fully in charge. The statement was made by René Emmanuel Sadi, Minister of Communication and government spokesperson, during a press briefing.

The clarification comes amid persistent speculation about the 89-year-old leader’s health and whereabouts, as he has been in Switzerland for at least 56 days. Addressing concerns directly, Sadi stated, “President Paul Biya is alive and has not resigned. I must emphasize: he will soon return to Cameroon, so it is premature to discuss any state leadership vacancy.”

While confirming Biya’s presence in Geneva, the spokesperson avoided disclosing the exact nature of the medical procedure the president underwent. Sadi noted, “He underwent an intervention some time ago. I’ve been clear: the president is in Geneva but is not hospitalized.” He reassured the public that Cameroon’s institutions are functioning normally, with key administrative figures continuing their duties without disruption.

The government’s stance underscores the absence of any constitutional vacancy, as the Constitutional Council—the sole body authorized to make such a determination—has not issued any such declaration. Sadi emphasized that the question of power transition is not a valid concern at this stage.
