WAPCO (Niger) advances community well-being through expanded public interest initiatives

In a recent impactful endeavor, WAPCO (Niger), in close collaboration with the local livestock bureau, successfully executed a comprehensive vaccination and deworming program for cattle within the Zinder region. This vital initiative reached seven distinct pastoral settlements, including the significant areas of N’Guel Eléfi and Tesker, providing essential health services to an impressive count of over 10,000 animals. This event signifies the triumphant completion of the initial phase of WAPCO (Niger)’s “Healthy Communities” public interest activities, which have now extended their reach to encompass all regions traversed by the pipeline.

To further bolster the health management capabilities of local populations, WAPCO (Niger) has proactively leveraged its internal medical resources. Utilizing on-site medical personnel and fundamental medications, the company launched two pioneering free community medical consultation projects near pumping stations 5 and 6 in early 2025. These pilots were met with enthusiastic reception from residents. Building on this success, a more extensive needs assessment was conducted, officially inaugurating the first phase of the broader “Healthy Communities” program in August 2025. To date, WAPCO (Niger) has facilitated a total of seven free community medical consultations, delivering healthcare services to 1,249 local inhabitants, and has generously donated a tricycle ambulance to a local community health center.

During the execution of these complimentary consultations, the company’s team gained valuable insight into the critical role livestock plays as a primary income source and livelihood for local families, recognizing the urgent need among herders for animal care. Responding directly to these community concerns, WAPCO (Niger) broadened the scope of its “Healthy Communities” initiatives. Partnering with local livestock authorities and other relevant organizations, WAPCO (Niger) has since provided vaccination and deworming services to more than 20,000 animals across three major pastoral gathering points situated along the pipeline route, thereby assisting herders in safeguarding their essential productive assets.

As a socially conscious enterprise, WAPCO (Niger) has consistently upheld a philosophy of reciprocal benefit and shared progress since its inception. While diligently ensuring the secure and consistent operation of the pipeline, the company places significant emphasis on fulfilling its corporate social responsibilities. WAPCO (Niger) actively champions the Integrated Community Development Project (ICDP), initiates public interest donations, and extends aid to communities. These efforts contribute meaningfully to enhancing local livelihoods and fostering social advancement, thereby continually strengthening the population’s “sense of gain” and cultivating an external environment conducive to the pipeline’s safe operation.

Looking ahead, WAPCO (Niger) is committed to refining its community needs assessments to precisely address the expectations of populations residing near the pipeline. The company plans to systematically broaden the scope of its public interest activities, ensuring that an increasing number of residents can partake in the benefits of development. While guaranteeing the safe and efficient flow of this crucial energy artery, WAPCO (Niger) will continue to collaborate closely with communities, undertaking tangible actions to support livelihood improvements and promote mutual growth and shared development between WAPCO (Niger) and the local populace.
