Senegal’s grand magal 2026: spiritual leader urges unity ahead of touba pilgrimage

As the nation prepares for the Grand Magal of Touba, scheduled for Sunday, August 2, 2026, Ousmane Sonko, President of Senegal’s National Assembly, made a courtesy visit to the holy city on Thursday, July 30. His destination: the residence of Serigne Mountakha Mbacké, the revered Khalife général of the Mouride brotherhood, to reaffirm the deep respect and admiration shared between the country’s political and spiritual leadership.

During the meeting, Sonko conveyed heartfelt greetings and emphasized the profound spiritual significance of the Grand Magal. This annual pilgrimage honors the exile of Cheikh Ahmadou Bamba, the revered founder of the Mouride order, whose teachings continue to inspire millions of Senegalese. The President also highlighted the enduring values of faith, resilience, endurance, and peace that define the occasion.
