Abidjan hosts ID4Africa 2026 summit on digital identity infrastructure
Abidjan to host ID4Africa 2026: a pivotal gathering for digital identity in Africa
From May 12 to 15, 2026, Abidjan will become the epicenter of Africa’s digital identity transformation at the 7th annual ID4Africa General Assembly, held at the Port-Bouët Exhibition Park. This year’s theme, “Digital identity: from public digital infrastructure to digital public ecosystems”, underscores the shift from technical solutions to holistic systems that integrate security, accessibility, and inclusivity.
ID4Africa is more than a conference—it is a pan-African convergence of policymakers, technical experts, private sector innovators, and international stakeholders. Together, they will explore how secure digital identification systems can empower citizens, streamline public services, and protect personal data in an increasingly digital world.
The event’s official inauguration on May 12, 2026, was led by Vice-President Tiémoko Meyliet Koné, signaling Côte d’Ivoire’s commitment to advancing digital governance. Over four days, discussions will delve into critical challenges: ensuring secure population identification, expanding access to digital public services, and fostering inclusive digital ecosystems that bridge gaps in infrastructure, regulation, and public trust.
Beyond infrastructure: building people-centered digital systems
The core mission of ID4Africa is to move beyond isolated technical solutions and cultivate comprehensive digital identity ecosystems. These systems must harmonize human-centric design, robust legal frameworks, institutional collaboration, and sector-specific applications to deliver real-world impact.
Since its inception in 2014, ID4Africa has been a driving force in assisting African nations to develop resilient, responsible digital identity frameworks. These frameworks are instrumental in accelerating digital transformation, enhancing service delivery, and supporting humanitarian initiatives across the continent.
Côte d’Ivoire’s digital leadership takes center stage
By hosting this landmark event, Côte d’Ivoire reaffirms its role as a leader in the continent’s digital evolution. The country is positioning itself as a hub for innovation, where reliable digital identity solutions are seen as foundational to unlocking access to essential services for all citizens.
The conference underscores the nation’s broader vision: to build a future where digital identity is not just a technical requirement, but a gateway to equity, opportunity, and sustainable development.
