Senegal reshuffles leadership with new Prime Minister appointment

Senegal’s political landscape shifts as new Prime Minister takes office

In a decisive move reshaping the nation’s governance, the President of Senegal, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, has appointed Ahmadou Al Aminou Mohamed Lo as the country’s new Prime Minister. The announcement, delivered via a televised decree, marks a significant turn in the evolving political narrative of the West African nation.

The newly appointed leader brings with him extensive experience from his tenure within the Central Bank of West African States (BCEAO). Prior to this pivotal role, he served as the Secretary-General in the first administration formed under President Faye, who assumed office in April 2024. His subsequent promotion to ministerial status further underscored his growing influence within the administration.

The transition to the Prime Minister’s office follows a period of heightened political activity in Senegal. Just three days prior to this announcement, on May 22, President Faye made the decision to relieve Ousmane Sonko of his duties as Prime Minister. Sonko, who had previously served as Faye’s mentor, had seen his relationship with the President deteriorate over time, culminating in this decisive administrative change.

The political climate in Senegal has been marked by notable turbulence in recent weeks. The reshuffling of leadership underscores the dynamic nature of the country’s governance, reflecting both strategic shifts and evolving priorities under the current administration.
