Magistrates file complaint against Chad’s public security minister

The executive boards of the Chad Magistrates’ Union (CMU) and the Autonomous Magistrates’ Union of Chad (AMUC) have filed an official complaint against Ali Ahmat Aghabache, Chad’s Minister of Public Security and Immigration, with the Prosecutor General near the N’Djamena Court of Appeal.

In their complaint, the unions accuse the minister of undermining the dignity of the judiciary and disrespecting magistrates. The allegations stem from a public statement made by Aghabache on May 24, 2026, which was widely circulated online and widely condemned by judicial authorities.

The minister’s remarks, deemed defamatory and insulting to the judiciary, have triggered strong reactions within the legal community. Magistrates argue that his statements qualify as public discrediting of judicial actions, contempt of a constituted body, and defamation under Chadian law.

Citing specific legal provisions, including Articles 142 and 144 of the Penal Code and Articles 527 and 528 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, the unions demand swift judicial action. They call for a thorough investigation, legal proceedings, and the restoration of the judiciary’s dignity, independence, and authority.
