Senegal appoints economist Ahmadou Al Aminou Lô as new prime minister
President Bassirou Diomaye Faye of Senegal has reshaped the country’s leadership by appointing economist Ahmadou Al Aminou Lô as the new prime minister. The decision was formally announced through a presidential decree broadcast on national television on May 25.
Lô, a seasoned economist with extensive experience at the Central Bank of West African States (BCEAO), previously held key positions in Senegal’s government. He served as Secretary-General in the initial cabinet formed by President Faye after the April 2024 elections before being elevated to ministerial rank.
The appointment follows a period of political turbulence in Senegal, marked by significant changes in the executive branch. It comes just four days after the dismissal of former Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko, a move that underscored growing divisions within the administration that had been simmering for months.
The new prime minister is expected to steer Senegal through a critical phase, as the nation navigates economic challenges and seeks to consolidate its political stability following recent upheavals in the government.
