Senegal president insists constitutional ruling must be respected

In a firm statement, Ousmane Sonko, President of Senegal’s National Assembly, addressed the nation following the Constitutional Council’s ruling that declared a recent constitutional reform bill unconstitutional. The leader of the Pastef movement acknowledged the decision, emphasizing that it is binding on all institutions and citizens.

« Beyond any debates on the reasoning behind this decision, one fact remains undeniable: this ruling is final and must be respected by everyone, » Sonko declared in an official statement.

Highlighting the importance of institutional checks and balances, he noted, « When each branch of government operates within its designated authority, no crisis can arise. »

Reaffirming the National Assembly’s commitment to its duties, Sonko underscored that legislative work will continue without interruption. « We will proceed with our mandate, ensuring laws are passed or rejected in service of the people who entrusted us with this responsibility, » he affirmed.
