Dakar court delays verdict in Sonko signature forgery case

For the second time, the Dakar Criminal Court has deferred its ruling in the high-profile case involving the alleged forgery of Ousmane Sonko’s signature. Khardiata Tandian, who has been held in custody for over a year, remains behind bars as the judicial process drags on.

The latest postponement was announced after the court sought yet another delay to secure the presence of a key figure in the proceedings. Chérif Zeyni Abidin Sy, identified as Tandian’s alleged accomplice, was absent during previous hearings, prompting the judge to reschedule the verdict for 23 July 2026.

Legal maneuvers and contested detention

With the deliberation now set for late July, Tandian’s defense team has seized the opportunity to push for her provisional release. Her lawyer argued that all procedural documents have already been submitted, making continued detention unnecessary. They also dismissed concerns about witness tampering or procedural interference, noting that Tandian has already been questioned and that the case’s core facts are established.

The defense further highlighted the harsh social and familial consequences of her prolonged incarceration. As a married mother, Tandian’s ongoing detention, they contended, is inflicting undue hardship on her family structure and well-being.

Prosecution opposes release on grounds of public order

The public prosecutor, however, strongly opposed the request. In court filings, the prosecution argued that granting provisional freedom could disrupt public order and undermine judicial proceedings. They also claimed that Tandian did not provide sufficient guarantees to ensure her continued presence throughout the trial, leaving the court unconvinced.

The judges ultimately sided with the prosecution, rejecting the defense’s plea. Tandian will remain in custody pending the next hearing, where the court will reconsider her case alongside the still-pending testimony of Chérif Zeyni Abidin Sy.

Unresolved questions and an uncertain future

As the court awaits the alleged accomplice’s appearance, the procedural limbo continues. The latest delay underscores the court’s insistence on hearing all involved parties before finalizing its decision. Unless additional postponements arise, the verdict will be delivered on 23 July 2026, leaving Tandian’s fate hanging in the balance for now.
