The Parti des peuples africains – Côte d’Ivoire (PPA-CI) is facing internal turbulence as it prepares for its first ordinary congress scheduled for May 14-15, 2026, in Abidjan. In an official statement released on May 13, 2026, the party leadership, headed by Laurent Gbagbo, announced disciplinary sanctions against 61 cadres and activists deemed “undisciplined.”

The move follows a decision by the Strategic and Political Council (CSP), outlined in document CSP n°02-2026/CSP/PPA-CI/KKJ/07052026 and endorsed by the party presidency the same day. The leadership emphasized that these measures aim to uphold internal discipline and ensure smooth preparations for the upcoming congress.

The sanctions are divided into three categories. The first group comprises 44 cadres suspended for 18 months, the second includes 10 cadres suspended for 12 months, and the third covers 7 cadres suspended for 6 months. During their suspension, the affected individuals are barred from participating in party activities and excluded from internal elections.

This stern action comes at a politically sensitive juncture, as the PPA-CI prepares for a pivotal organizational event. Observers suggest the crackdown reflects the leadership’s determination to reinforce internal authority and consolidate support around the party’s official stance ahead of the congress.

The scale of the suspensions is expected to spark discussions within the party. Some analysts interpret the move as a sign of growing tensions, highlighting strategic disagreements and leadership disputes as the congress approaches. As of now, no public statements have emerged from the sanctioned cadres. However, the sweeping nature of these measures could reshape internal power dynamics and influence the discussions at the upcoming congress, which is poised to be a defining moment for the party’s future.

internal discipline takes center stage at ppa-ci

The timing of these sanctions underscores the party’s urgency to present a united front ahead of the congress. With the leadership tightening its grip, the stage is set for a high-stakes gathering where key decisions will shape the PPA-CI’s trajectory in the coming years.
