Chad mining sector advances with local innovations and strategic partnerships

Chad’s mining future brightens with homegrown tech and global partnerships

The Minister of Mines, Fatimé Haram Acyl, recently highlighted groundbreaking achievements by the Société nationale d’exploitation minière et de commercialisation (SONEMIC), emphasizing the role of local innovation in reshaping Chad’s mining landscape.

During a review of SONEMIC’s annual performance, Minister Acyl praised the development of a locally built software system that tracks mining permits, integrates with customs and tax authorities, and has already documented 147 issued permits. This innovation not only enhances transparency but also strengthens the reliability of Chad’s mining sector, fostering trust among stakeholders.

A strategic roadmap for resource mapping and conflict prevention

The minister outlined plans for a comprehensive mapping initiative aimed at accurately documenting mineral resources across key provinces. This effort is designed to prevent conflicts and ensure sustainable exploitation. Additionally, SONEMIC is engaging in high-impact collaborations, including discussions with international partners from the United Arab Emirates to advance water transformation projects and develop an antimony refining facility. These initiatives signal a bold step toward diversifying Chad’s economy and reducing reliance on traditional revenue streams.

Unified leadership drives sectoral growth

Minister Acyl stressed the importance of cohesive communication and unified vision within the mining and petroleum sectors. She called for a collective approach, aligning all efforts with the national development strategy led by the President. By fostering collaboration and transparency, Chad aims to harness its mineral wealth as a catalyst for job creation and sustainable economic growth.

The annual review underscores a pivotal moment for SONEMIC, where innovation, strategic planning, and international cooperation converge to propel Chad’s mining sector forward. “There is meaningful work ahead, and I am confident that Chad will emerge as a leader in this transformative journey,” the minister affirmed, urging all stakeholders to contribute actively to this national endeavor.
