Togo: opposition unites in new alliance to challenge constitutional changes

The Togolese opposition has taken a significant step forward with the formation of a new coalition, the National Framework for Change in Togo (CNCC), which held its first public gathering in Lomé on May 9. This unprecedented meeting marks a renewed push against the controversial 2024 Constitution that critics argue consolidates President Faure Gnassingbé’s grip on power.

The CNCC brings together four opposition parties alongside influential civil society organizations, signaling a united front in the fight for democratic reforms. “This gathering demonstrates that the Togolese people refuse to accept constitutional manipulation that undermines their voice,” stated David Dosseh, spokesperson for the Citizen Front for a Standing Togo (FCTD), a prominent civil society group.

Challenging constitutional amendments

The opposition coalition is particularly focused on contesting key provisions of the 2024 Constitution. Critics argue that the new framework removes direct universal suffrage for presidential elections and shifts power toward a parliamentary system where the presidency is redefined as the head of the Council of Ministers. Currently, Faure Gnassingbé holds this position, raising concerns about continued executive dominance.

The CNCC’s emergence comes at a critical time, as public opposition meetings have been scarce in recent years. The last major gathering occurred over a year ago, making this event particularly noteworthy for its timing and symbolism.

Voices of dissent

Prominent opposition figures seized the opportunity to address the crowd. Jean-Pierre Fabre, leader of the National Alliance for Change (ANC), highlighted the case of activist Honoré Sitsopé Sokpor, known as “Affectio,” who was re-arrested on May 4 after being released from prison under judicial supervision. Fabre condemned the detention as “arbitrary and an act of persecution.”
