Senegal’s flood prevention: Sonko urges updated emergency plans

During the most recent Council of Ministers meeting, Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko underscored the urgent need to bolster flood prevention and management strategies across Senegal. With the rainy season approaching, he highlighted critical areas requiring immediate attention, including the revitalization of drainage systems, verification of protective infrastructure, and deployment of emergency response equipment.

Coordinated national effort against flooding

The Prime Minister emphasized the cross-ministerial nature of flood prevention, calling for seamless collaboration between government agencies. Under the leadership of the Ministry of Hydraulics and Sanitation, with support from the Ministry of Interior, all relevant departments must synchronize their efforts—especially in civil protection and crisis management coordination.

Sonko issued clear directives for ministries to implement key measures without delay. These include updating and validating local emergency plans, ensuring early warning systems function optimally, reinforcing communication channels with communities, and positioning intervention resources strategically. Additionally, a joint interministerial simulation drill has been mandated before mid-June to test readiness and response capabilities.
