Ousmane Sonko warns of government collapse in Senegal

Political tensions in Senegal have reached a critical point as opposition leader Ousmane Sonko issues a bold warning to the ruling party. Speaking to journalists, the head of the Pastef party made clear his intention to leverage his party’s parliamentary influence to challenge the government’s stability.

The declaration follows a series of escalating confrontations between Sonko’s camp and the presidential majority. With Pastef holding a significant bloc in the National Assembly, Sonko asserted that his party possesses the institutional tools to destabilize the executive branch. « We control the National Assembly and could bring down this government at any time, » he stated, leaving no room for ambiguity about his party’s capabilities.

However, despite this show of strength, Sonko emphasized that his ultimate goal is not to trigger a constitutional crisis. Instead, he framed his actions as a defense of Senegal’s stability while advancing Pastef’s long-term political agenda. « We are not seeking to paralyze the country, » he reassured, while reaffirming his commitment to shaping the nation’s future beyond the 2029 presidential election.

The opposition leader also dismissed suggestions that his party would use parliamentary institutions as a weapon against President Bassirou Diomaye Faye. Yet, he accused the ruling camp of initiating hostilities by pursuing legal challenges before the Constitutional Council. Sonko’s remarks reflect a deepening divide, one that he attributes to strategic missteps by the government rather than his own confrontational approach.

Looking back on the recent legislative elections, Sonko defended his decision to run Pastef independently rather than forming an electoral coalition. He argued that this strategy has preserved his party’s autonomy and strengthened its grip on the parliamentary majority. « We chose a path that ensures our freedom of action, » he explained, positioning Pastef as the true guardian of Senegal’s democratic institutions.

In a defiant tone, Sonko concluded by accusing unnamed forces within the system of targeting him politically. Yet, he expressed unwavering confidence that these attempts to undermine him would ultimately fail, signaling a continued standoff in Senegal’s political arena.
