Benin now has a new leader. Romuald Wadagni, who secured over 94% of the vote in April’s election, was formally installed as president in a ceremony held at the Cotonou presidential palace.

At 49 years old, the former Finance Minister begins a seven-year term that may be renewed, taking the reins from his political mentor, Patrice Talon, who concludes a ten-year presidency.

Economic continuity and security challenges ahead

In his inaugural address, Wadagni paid tribute to Talon before vowing to deliver growth that would be “tangible in the daily lives of citizens.”

Renowned for shaping the country’s major economic reforms in recent years, he now faces pressing challenges, including the growing jihadist threat in northern Benin.

The new president pledged a “firm” state response to security risks while emphasizing the need to deepen regional cooperation.

Early diplomatic thaw with Sahel neighbors

The inauguration also signaled a thaw in relations with neighboring Sahel countries.

Niger, which had maintained strained ties with Cotonou, was represented by Prime Minister Ali Mahaman Lamine Zeine, whose presence drew warm applause during the event.

Both Burkina Faso and Mali sent their foreign ministers to the ceremony.

Wadagni’s initial actions regarding public freedoms will be closely watched, especially after multiple NGOs accused the outgoing administration of tightening political and media restrictions in Benin.
