Tom Saintfiet ends tenure as Mali football coach amid crisis
Mali football team bids farewell to coach Tom Saintfiet
The Belgian football manager Tom Saintfiet has announced his immediate departure from his position as coach of the Mali national football team, effective April 27, 2026. His resignation comes during a period of escalating political and security challenges in the country, exacerbated by intensified attacks from armed groups.
In a heartfelt statement shared on his Facebook profile, Saintfiet reflected on his nearly two-year tenure, which began in August 2024. He expressed pride in his work despite the difficult circumstances, stating: “Today marks the end of my mission as head coach of the Mali national team A squad. I leave with pride and dedication, though the journey was not without its challenges. The time has now come to embrace a new challenge.”
Mali coach Saintfiet’s legacy: two losses in 17 matches
During his leadership, the Malian national football team, dubbed the Aigles du Mali (Eagles of Mali), achieved a commendable record of just two defeats in 17 competitive matches. This includes a narrow quarter-final loss to Senegal in the most recent Africa Cup of Nations (CAN) (1-0), a tournament where Mali had shown promise before their elimination.
Saintfiet also acknowledged the broader context affecting the nation, saying: “In these exceptionally challenging times facing Mali, my deepest thoughts go out to the Malian people and the entire nation. I send a message of compassion, solidarity, and unity. Football is, above all, a sport that brings people together—a beacon of hope and peace for Mali.”
The coach, aged 53, had previously been linked with a move to Ghana before ultimately being replaced by Portuguese tactician Carlos Queiroz at the helm of the Black Stars.
Mali FA seeks new head coach after Saintfiet’s exit
In response to Saintfiet’s departure, the Malian Football Federation (FMF), represented by its president Mahamadou Baba Cissé, publicly praised the outgoing coach’s contributions. A call for applications has been issued to identify a suitable successor to lead the Aigles into future competitions.
Saintfiet concluded his statement with an emotional farewell: “May peace, stability, and hope return to Mali for good. I wish the team the very best of luck! Forward, the Eagles!”
