Senegalese youth urged to excel for 2026 Dakar youth olympics
With just over a year remaining until the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games, President Bassirou Diomaye Faye of Senegal has framed the event as a transformative national project. During the annual top student awards ceremony, he challenged the country’s brightest young minds to channel their talents toward national progress.
Linking academic excellence to Dakar 2026
The ceremony honoring top students in the national examination coincided with the theme: “Senegal at the dawn of the Youth Olympic Games: reshaping the meaning of the common good through Olympic values”. President Faye emphasized that the Games represent far more than a sporting spectacle—they embody a historic responsibility for the continent, as Senegal prepares to become Africa’s first host of an Olympic event.
“This milestone carries an ideal: a generation trained in excellence, respect, and friendship”, he stated, urging that Olympic principles should permeate schools, citizenship, and social cohesion.
A call to serve the nation
Addressing the award-winning students, the president underscored education’s pivotal role in shaping tomorrow’s Senegal. “Today, the Republic honors you. Tomorrow, it will call upon you to serve”, he declared, stressing that true success lies in contributing to the greater good. His vision extends beyond skilled professionals—he seeks citizens committed to collective progress, regardless of their social background.
Honoring educators and a champion of health
President Faye also paid tribute to Awa Marie Coll Seck, the event’s honorary patron and former Minister of Health, whose career exemplifies how excellence, when applied purposefully, can elevate society. “Excellence is measured not by achievement alone, but by its impact”, he remarked.
Teachers, too, were recognized as cornerstones of national development. “To teach is not merely to impart knowledge—it is to awaken conscience”, he said, calling on educators to uphold rigor, integrity, and duty.
