Allegations of mismanaged funds for Casamance peace

The Kiiraay – Les Patriotes Républicains party, in a statement released on August 25, 2026, sharply criticized the management of special funds designated for peace initiatives in Casamance. The political entity contends that Ousmane Sonko authorized expenditures totaling 3.7 billion FCFA from the ‘Jamm pour la Paix en Casamance‘ account between 2025 and 2026, allegedly without providing adequate justification for these disbursements.

The party further asserts that the former Prime Minister cited vehicle acquisitions and the refurbishment of the administrative building as explanations for a portion of these costs. However, Kiiraay views these operations as entirely unrelated to the fund’s core mission, which is dedicated to fostering peace efforts within the Casamance region.

This situation, according to the political group, raises serious questions regarding consistency in the discourse surrounding transparency and accountability. The party emphatically stated, « Transparency is a variable concept », arguing that all public funds should be subject to identical justification requirements, regardless of the official responsible for their administration.

This public declaration from the Kiiraay – Les Patriotes Républicains party follows a recent decision by the Constitutional Council. The Council ruled against a law, which had been passed by the PASTEF-dominated National Assembly, aimed at controlling special funds. As of now, former Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko has not yet issued a response to these accusations from the ruling party.
