President Talon bids farewell as Wadagni prepares to take office
As Benin prepares for Romuald Wadagni’s inauguration this Sunday, May 24, 2026, outgoing President Patrice Talon delivered a heartfelt address to the nation. Having completed his two constitutional terms and navigated a tumultuous decade marked by a thwarted coup attempt, the head of state reflected on a decade of leadership while urging continuity in public service.
In his final message to the people of Benin, President Talon acknowledged the historic transition ahead, praising the nation’s progress and extending his best wishes to his successor. “On this landmark Sunday, our elected President Romuald Wadagni will officially assume office,” he noted. “His mission will be to guide our nation toward greater collective and individual prosperity—a duty he is now entrusted to fulfill.”
Expressing unwavering support for the incoming administration, Talon stated, “I reaffirm my deepest wishes for his success over the next seven years.”
The outgoing president then reflected on his tenure with pride, despite acknowledging the challenges faced. “As I step down, I owe you my deepest gratitude and share my immense pride in the demanding path we have courageously walked together,” he remarked. “We have overcome obstacles, implemented crucial reforms, and launched transformative projects to strengthen our state and prioritize socio-economic development.”
While recognizing the difficulties encountered, Talon emphasized resilience: “The journey was never easy—often strewn with hurdles—but these very challenges fueled our determination.” He highlighted the tangible progress achieved, noting international recognition of Benin’s advancements. “Together, we have made remarkable strides. Our collective efforts and sacrifices are gradually bearing fruit,” he affirmed.
Talon underscored the inclusive nature of this progress, emphasizing that every segment of society—urban and rural populations, the diaspora, youth and elders—contributed to these milestones. “This success belongs to all of us—Beninese citizens and the diaspora alike,” he declared.
In a deeply personal moment, he expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to serve: “Leading this nation has been the honor of a lifetime. My gratitude to Benin and each of you is boundless,” he shared.
As he formally closed this chapter, Talon conveyed his optimism for Benin’s future under Wadagni’s leadership. “Entrusting the presidency to President Romuald Wadagni fills me with confidence. Under his guidance, I am certain our nation will achieve even greater heights,” he asserted. “Our shared accomplishments and relentless determination will propel us forward, uniting around a vision of progress that delivers well-being, pride, and prosperity to every citizen.”
