Fifa president gianni infantino warns teams against walking off pitch at world cup 2026
Après Sénégal–Maroc, Infantino avertit avant le Mondial : « Toute équipe qui quitte le terrain sera…»

Following a contentious Africa Cup of Nations (CAN) final between Senegal and Morocco, FIFA President Gianni Infantino has issued a firm warning to national teams worldwide. This significant announcement comes just weeks before the eagerly awaited start of the FIFA World Cup 2026, set to be hosted across the United States, Canada, and Mexico, underscoring a stringent approach to on-field discipline.

The aforementioned CAN championship match, which saw Senegal secure a 1-0 victory against Morocco, was overshadowed by a notable refereeing controversy. During the game, Congolese referee Jean-Jacques Ndella made a contentious decision, awarding a penalty to Morocco shortly after a goal scored by Senegal had been disallowed. This sequence of events provoked a strong reaction from the Senegalese squad. Led by coach Pape Thiaw, the players staged a walk-off, leaving the pitch for approximately ten minutes in protest before ultimately returning to complete the game.

Despite the disruption, the Lions of Teranga persevered, clinching their second continental title thanks to a decisive goal from Pape Guèye.

As the 2026 World Cup draws nearer, Gianni Infantino has emphasized FIFA’s unwavering commitment to maintaining the integrity of the sport and strictly enforcing its disciplinary codes. He delivered an unambiguous message concerning team conduct during matches: “From the World Cup onwards, any team that decides to leave the field to protest against the refereeing will receive red cards and lose the match by forfeit!”

This clear and resolute declaration serves as a proactive measure, designed to prevent any similar incidents of on-field protest at the forthcoming global football spectacle, thereby ensuring fair play and respect for official decisions.
