Côte d’Ivoire celebrates women’s pivotal role in nation-building

The Femme Ivoirienne en Politique (FIP) organization initiated the first-ever National Week of Women Builders of the Nation on Thursday, July 30, at Yopougon Town Hall. This landmark event, running from August 1 to 4, 2026, coincides with Côte d’Ivoire’s 66th independence anniversary.

Themed 66 Years of Independence: Women’s Achievements and Future Prospects, the initiative shines a spotlight on women’s indispensable role in the country’s political, economic, social, and cultural progress. It also serves as a vital forum to address persistent challenges and chart a forward-looking agenda for gender equality.

Rebecca Yao, President of FIP, emphasized the urgency of this reflection: “We saw the need to pause and assess the gains women have secured since independence, pinpoint remaining obstacles, and craft actionable solutions.” The week will culminate in a comprehensive white paper to be submitted to policymakers, ensuring that key recommendations are not left unaddressed.

From August 1 to 3, Yopougon Town Hall will host a national symposium featuring an opening panel followed by sixteen thematic discussions. These sessions will explore critical topics such as female leadership, healthcare, education, economic empowerment, youth engagement, and women’s rights. An accompanying exhibition will showcase the inspiring journeys of trailblazing women alongside successful entrepreneurship initiatives led by women.

The highlight of the week will be the gala dinner on August 4 at Sofitel Hôtel Ivoire, where 66 pioneering women will be honored for their decades-long contributions to Côte d’Ivoire’s development since 1960.

Looking ahead, Rebecca Yao expressed her vision to institutionalize this event annually: “Before proposing new solutions, we will revisit the resolutions from each edition to track progress and ensure accountability.”

Mireille Bamba, Yopougon’s Deputy, praised the initiative and reaffirmed the unwavering support of Mayor-Adjoint Adama Bictogo. Organizers aim to transform this week into a permanent annual platform for dialogue, reflection, and recognition of women’s vital contributions to the nation’s growth.
