Benin romuald wadagni sworn in as new president amid regional tensions

The inauguration ceremony for Benin’s new leadership commenced with the Constitutional Court delivering its official verdict on the presidential election results from the elevated podium. Dressed in a formal navy suit and tie, Romuald Wadagni took the oath of office with his right hand raised, vowing to uphold the Constitution and face legal consequences for any breach. The historic moment was marked by a ceremonial 12-gun salute.

Following the oath, Wadagni was formally invested as Grand Master of the National Orders of Benin. The Chief of Staff then presented him with the national flag, symbolizing the transfer of authority. In his inaugural address, the new president pledged unwavering commitment to serving Benin with integrity while safeguarding the rule of law and fundamental freedoms.

Wadagni emphasized economic growth as a national priority, promising that prosperity would extend to every household. On security matters, he declared Benin would maintain a firm stance against any threats to its sovereignty, particularly in combating terrorism.

Strengthening regional partnerships

The ceremony at the Palais des Congrès brought together prominent figures, including former presidents Nicéphore Soglo and Thomas Boni Yayi, alongside 16 international delegations. Notably present were representatives from neighboring countries—Togo, Nigeria, Burkina Faso—and representatives from Niger, with which diplomatic relations remain delicate.

Addressing the assembled leaders, Wadagni underscored the necessity of regional solidarity, declaring, “We are bound together by shared destiny and must collaborate to thrive.”
