Sénégal space week 2026: birame diop urges space mastery to secure nation

At the launch of Sénégal Space Week 2026, General Birame Diop, representing President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, delivered a powerful message to a room filled with international experts and partners. He underscored that modern security challenges are no longer confined to land, sea, or air—they now extend into space, where data and advanced technologies hold the key to safeguarding national interests.

The General emphasized that mastering space technology is not just a strategic advantage but a necessity for Sénégal. By leveraging satellite imagery, geospatial intelligence, and advanced mapping tools, the nation can enhance its ability to monitor its borders, combat terrorism, curb maritime piracy, and disrupt transnational crime networks. “The future of our security depends on our ability to see beyond the horizon,” he asserted.

During the event, Diop praised the Sénégalaise d’Études Spatiales for its groundbreaking initiatives in the space sector. The agency’s ongoing projects, including satellite data analysis and geointelligence tools, are already proving invaluable to defense and security forces. These capabilities enable better decision-making, risk prediction, and crisis response. To further bolster collaboration, several international partnership agreements were formalized, strengthening Sénégal’s ties with global space agencies and research institutions.

Looking ahead, the General called for a bold investment in youth education, particularly in fields like space technology, digital innovation, and data science. He stressed that nurturing a skilled workforce and expanding research infrastructure are critical steps for Sénégal to emerge as a leader in Africa’s space sector. The event also paid tribute to the late General Mansour Seck, a pioneer in aviation whose legacy continues to inspire the nation’s aerospace ambitions.
