Cameroon Telecommunications (CAMTEL), the national telecommunications operator, recently hosted a high-level delegation from Amazon Web Services (AWS), the global leader in cloud computing. The primary focus of these discussions was to explore avenues for advancing Cameroon’s digital transformation through cutting-edge cloud infrastructure, artificial intelligence (AI), and satellite technologies.
This engagement signals a significant step forward for Cameroon’s digital ecosystem, moving towards disruptive innovation. Formal strategic discussions took place in Yaoundé, bringing together senior leadership from the public operator and representatives from Amazon’s Africa subsidiary.
Representing AWS Africa were Ms. Raya Nassar and Mr. Naidoo Terrence. Highlighting the geopolitical and economic significance of this meeting, Ms. Antoinette Manyaga, representing the ICT services of the United States Embassy in Cameroon, was also in attendance.

Technological pillars: satellite, cloud, and AI
The discussions between CAMTEL and AWS laid the groundwork for a prospective collaboration centered on three crucial technological pillars, vital for the digital future of the Central African sub-region:
- Satellite technologies: Aiming to enhance connectivity in underserved and remote areas while strengthening CAMTEL’s existing infrastructure.
- Advanced Cloud solutions: Designed to provide Cameroonian businesses and government entities with highly secure, flexible, and scalable data storage and processing capabilities.
- Artificial Intelligence (AI): Intended to modernize services, optimize the operator’s networks, and deliver innovative solutions to end-users and clients.
“Together, CAMTEL and AWS are evaluating potential synergies to accelerate Cameroon’s digital transformation and deliver the pinnacle of innovation to our customers,” stated CAMTEL’s top management.
Driving digital transformation forward
For CAMTEL, this strategic alignment with AWS is integral to its overarching strategy of modernizing its infrastructure and diversifying its service offerings. By leveraging the technological expertise of a global leader like Amazon, the Cameroonian operator aspires to establish itself as a pivotal digital hub across Central Africa.
Should this partnership culminate in definitive agreements, it is expected to significantly boost cloud adoption within both the public administration and private sector in Cameroon, simultaneously fostering the growth and innovation of the local tech startup ecosystem.
