Senegal assembly presidency secured by Ousmane Sonko after political shift
Just four days after being dismissed as Prime Minister, Ousmane Sonko has been elected President of Senegal’s National Assembly, marking a significant political development in the country’s governance.
In a decisive vote held on Tuesday, Sonko—leader of the ruling party, the African Patriots of Senegal for Work, Ethics and Fraternity (PASTEF)—secured 132 votes out of 133 cast, succeeding El Malick Ndiaye, who resigned from the position over the weekend.
New leadership takes shape amid Senegal’s evolving political landscape
The election follows President Bassirou Diomaye Faye’s appointment of a new Prime Minister, Ahmadou Al Aminou Lô, who was sworn in on Monday evening. Lô previously served as Minister in charge of overseeing the National Transformation Programme for Senegal 2050, as well as Secretary-General of the Government of Senegal.
A mandate defined by transition and continuity
The political reshuffle underscores the dynamic shifts within Senegal’s leadership, with Sonko’s rise to the Assembly’s presidency reflecting both public support and strategic realignment. His election comes at a pivotal moment as the nation navigates policy priorities and institutional stability.
As Senegal’s political currents continue to evolve, Sonko’s new role positions him at the heart of legislative decision-making, poised to influence the country’s trajectory in the coming years.
