Supporters from the Tribune Loire section escalated tensions by launching smoke bombs onto the pitch, triggering chaotic scenes that overwhelmed stadium security.
The match, already emotionally charged as Nantes had confirmed their relegation to Ligue 2 a week earlier, saw fans unfurl provocative banners before the explosive outburst. With around a hundred riot police deployed near the stadium, their positioning failed to prevent the violent escalation. Seats were ripped from the stands and hurled at security forces as stunned spectators watched the unfolding chaos.
Referee Stéphanie Frappart immediately ordered both teams to retreat to the locker rooms while Vahid Halilhodzic, concluding his 74-year career as a coach, remained on the field facing the pitch invaders.
