A nightmare evening unfolded at Stade de la Beaujoire on Sunday as the final Ligue 1 clash between Nantes and Toulouse was suspended just 22 minutes into the game. Supporters from the Tribune Loire section escalated tensions by launching smoke bombs onto the pitch, triggering chaotic scenes that overwhelmed stadium security.

The match, already emotionally charged as Nantes had confirmed their relegation to Ligue 2 a week earlier, saw fans unfurl provocative banners before the explosive outburst. With around a hundred riot police deployed near the stadium, their positioning failed to prevent the violent escalation. Seats were ripped from the stands and hurled at security forces as stunned spectators watched the unfolding chaos.

Referee Stéphanie Frappart immediately ordered both teams to retreat to the locker rooms while Vahid Halilhodzic, concluding his 74-year career as a coach, remained on the field facing the pitch invaders. The veteran tactician, visibly distressed by the events, was restrained by stadium stewards after attempting to confront the disruptive elements. Earlier in the match, he had received a rare ovation from Nantes ultras, the Brigade Loire, who gathered in the stadium’s upper tiers.

When Halilhodzic later returned to the touchline, he insisted on approaching the fans. “It’s too dangerous—they’re fighting each other,” he was warned. His response: “What are they going to do?” underscored the surreal nature of the situation as players were even spotted urging their families to evacuate the venue.

After nearly ten minutes of violent clashes, riot police attempted to advance toward the Tribune Loire but were repelled by masked ringleaders in fierce exchanges. The intensity peaked as projectiles rained down on security forces while the rest of the stadium stood in stunned silence.

A crisis cell has since been activated, involving representatives from France’s professional football league (LFP) and public authorities. While no official decision has been announced, all indications suggest the match may be definitively abandoned. As of 21:45 local time, play had not resumed, leaving the outcome uncertain.
