Côte d’Ivoire hosts student banking day and mentoring event to boost careers

Fostering financial talent: Côte d’Ivoire’s banking students and young professionals engage in career-shaping discussions

At the heart of Cocody’s Félix Houphouët-Boigny University, a dynamic convergence of future finance leaders and industry experts unfolded as the second edition of the Student Banker Day (JEB) and the inaugural Mentoring Day took center stage. Organized by the Alumni and Banking Students Association of Félix Houphouët-Boigny University (AEB-UFHB), in collaboration with Afrique Femme, the Ministry of Youth, Professional Integration and Civic Service, and the Youth Employment Agency, the event drew hundreds of aspiring bankers and finance professionals.

The ceremony was graced by the presence of Mr. Anderson Assui, Special Advisor to the Minister of Youth, Professional Integration and Civic Service, who represented the government’s commitment to nurturing young talent in the financial sector.

A fresh approach to professional readiness

The first-ever Mentoring Day introduced an innovative twist with two TED Talks designed to sharpen soft skills and leadership qualities. The sessions aimed to bridge the gap between students and seasoned professionals, equipping attendees with the tools needed to thrive in today’s competitive job market.

Mr. Assolé Dabiré, Human Resources Director at Zenith Bank Côte d’Ivoire, led the first TED Talk, dissecting the behavioral traits employers prioritize in new hires. The second session, led by Ms. Fanta Traoré, CEO of Empower Consulting, highlighted the transformative power of networking in career growth and how a strong professional circle unlocks doors to opportunity.

Panel discussions tackle finance’s biggest challenges

Two high-profile panels dominated the agenda, tackling pressing issues in Africa’s financial landscape. The first panel, focused on digital transformation and interoperability within the West African Economic and Monetary Union (UEMOA), brought together representatives from the Central Bank of West African States (BCEAO), Wave, Djamo, and Visa. Discussions revolved around payment innovations, financial inclusion, and the future of digital finance in the region.

The second panel explored life insurance, pension funds, and economic financing, featuring a keynote by Mr. Jean Kacou Diagou, Founder and President of the NSIA Group. Through a compelling narrative, he recounted the milestones of building his enterprise and shared timeless lessons on perseverance, integrity, and long-term vision—advice that resonated deeply with the students.

Networking and mentorship take center stage

Beyond the panels and talks, students seized the chance to engage directly with speakers, seek career guidance, and expand their professional networks through structured mentoring and networking sessions. These interactions provided a rare opportunity to gain firsthand insights from industry leaders shaping Côte d’Ivoire’s financial future.

The organizers emphasized their vision: to strengthen the link between academia and the financial sector. By promoting knowledge-sharing, mentorship, and skill development, they aim to prepare young professionals for the evolving demands of the job market while fostering lasting connections between students and decision-makers in finance.
