Across Niger, Burkina Faso, and Mali, an estimated 7.5 million children are in desperate need of immediate assistance, despite some advancements in public health, education, and civil registration.
unicef urges global community to act
Following a crucial 14-day visit to the region, Ted Chaiban, the Deputy Executive Director of UNICEF, issued a stark warning about a crisis that remains largely overlooked on the international stage.
He highlighted a region where communities demonstrate remarkable resilience, yet are simultaneously enduring the persistent effects of widespread insecurity, severe climate disruptions, and deep-seated socio-economic challenges.
displacement, violence, and closed schools persist
Data compiled by UNICEF indicates that over 3.6 million individuals have been forced to flee their homes due to escalating violence. Furthermore, the United Nations has documented more than 1,500 egregious violations against children, encompassing tragic killings, abductions, and recruitment into armed factions.
The crisis also severely impacts educational access. By 2025, over 8,400 schools had become inaccessible, denying countless children their right to learn and leaving them highly vulnerable to illness, psychological trauma, and extreme poverty.
