Benin and Mali strengthen bilateral ties with new solidarity pact

In a landmark diplomatic engagement, the President of the Republic of Benin, Romuald Wadagni, undertook a pivotal working visit to Bamako on June 9, 2026. The visit, hosted by Malian Head of State General Assimi Goïta, marked the beginning of a transformative phase in BeninMali relations, culminating in the adoption of decisive bilateral resolutions.

Reinforcing economic and commercial bridges

The cornerstone of the discussions revolved around revitalizing economic exchanges between the two nations. Recognizing the critical role of the Port of Cotonou in supplying goods to Mali, both leaders committed to deepening bilateral trade. To formalize these commitments, the immediate reactivation of the BeninMali Joint High Commission was announced. The next session is anticipated to swiftly follow, aiming to solidify economic agreements and streamline the movement of goods and investments.

Unified approach to security and sovereignty

With regional security challenges intensifying across the Sahel-Sahara belt and West Africa, Benin and Mali have aligned their strategies. A key resolution involves enhancing security coordination to counter terrorism and organized crime more effectively. Diplomatically, both nations reaffirmed their unwavering commitment to sovereignty, territorial integrity, and non-interference in internal affairs—a stance underscoring their resolve to uphold each other’s strategic autonomy on the global stage.

“The futures of our peoples are intertwined by history. Today, we are penning a new chapter rooted in mutual respect and co-development,” stated the Beninese delegation.

Cultural and people-to-people ties take center stage

Beyond political and economic agendas, cultural exchanges and societal bonds were highlighted as priorities. To sustain this momentum, President Wadagni extended an official invitation to General Goïta for a state visit to Benin. The invitation was warmly accepted, with dates to be finalized through diplomatic channels.

This meeting in Bamako signifies a significant diplomatic milestone, demonstrating that amidst regional geopolitical shifts, pragmatic cooperation remains a steadfast pillar of BeninMali relations.
