AS Monaco suffers dramatic Ligue 1 defeat against Strasbourg

Despite leading 4-1 with less than an hour played, AS Monaco suffered a dramatic 5-4 defeat against Strasbourg in the final matchday of the Ligue 1 season. This loss secured a seventh-place finish for the Monegasque side.

With Lille’s recent setback fresh in mind, Sébastien Pocognoli adjusted his tactical approach for the Alsace clash, reverting to a 4-2-3-1 formation. Denis Zakaria partnered Lamine Camara in midfield, Ansu Fati operated as the attacking midfielder behind Folarin Balogun, and Simon Adingra returned to the left flank. In front of 250 traveling supporters, Monaco’s high press and aggressive ball recoveries set the tone early.

Lamine Camara struck first in the 10th minute after intercepting a misplaced pass from El Mourabet, slotting home past the stranded goalkeeper. After Martial Godo halved the deficit with a late strike in the 34th minute, the Senegalese midfielder restored Monaco’s lead with a powerful shot under the crossbar. Ansu Fati then doubled the advantage just before the break. Ten minutes after the interval, a deflected Folarin Balogun effort—rebounded into his own net by Ismaël Doukouré—made it 4-1.

The visitors’ lead evaporated in a breathtaking 30-minute spell. Diego Moreira pulled one back, Sébastian Nanasi swiftly equalized in the 72nd minute, and Godo then curled a shot past the keeper just over ten minutes from time. Paris Brunner, introduced late on, saw a header rattle the crossbar in the 87th minute, but it was too late to salvage a point. Four goals conceded in half an hour condemned Monaco to defeat.

Pocognoli concedes Monaco’s mental fragility

« We started strongly and controlled the first half well. At 4-1, some may have thought the game was over, but unfortunately we conceded a goal that reignited the contest. » Sébastien Pocognoli reflected after the match, before highlighting a persistent issue: « This isn’t the first time this season we’ve collapsed defensively when the game slips from our grasp. Our mental resilience often wavers at crucial moments. » He concluded: « We simply lacked consistency to close out a match we had in hand. »

A season of highs and lows concludes

Ending the 2025-2026 campaign in seventh position, AS Monaco will finish without European football next season, following two consecutive Champions League appearances. The Belgian coach was blunt in his assessment: « My role is to evaluate what went wrong, and there’s clearly room for improvement. When I arrived, I aimed to instill identity, cohesion, and clear principles that remained unchanged. It’s essential to retain the positives and build on them for next year. » With the transfer window looming, the upcoming summer will be pivotal in reshaping the club’s sporting project.
