US-Morocco military cooperation: a cutting-edge training hub rising in tan-tan
A new era of defense collaboration between the United States and Morocco
The Kingdom of Morocco is set to host a groundbreaking military training and innovation hub in Tan-Tan, designed to redefine defense capabilities in Africa. The African Multidomain Training and Experimentation Center (AMTEC) will serve as a strategic platform for integrating cutting-edge military technologies and fostering interoperability between African and Western armed forces.
Three pillars to modernize military training
AMTEC’s architecture is built on three core components:
- Multidomain Training Area (MDTA): A state-of-the-art facility enabling forces to train in complex operational environments, including full-spectrum electromagnetic warfare simulations.
- Drone Academy (MTDA): A specialized institution focused on training African operators in small unmanned aerial systems (sUAS), with a strong emphasis on counterterrorism operations in West Africa.
- Innovation and Experimentation Center: A dynamic laboratory for testing emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, autonomous systems, and advanced communications. The center prioritizes cost-effective, scalable solutions tailored to African operational realities.
Strategic vision and economic potential
General Mohammed Berrid, Inspector General of the Royal Moroccan Armed Forces (FAR), highlighted the country’s readiness to bring this vision to life swiftly. “Morocco’s existing infrastructure and skilled workforce provide the ideal foundation to transition from concept to operational reality in record time,” he stated. The initiative positions Morocco as a reliable industrial partner for the United States, enhancing its role in regional security.
The AMTEC project extends beyond military applications, opening doors to economic and technological advancements. It aims to engage industrial and academic stakeholders, fostering an innovation ecosystem around defense technologies. The center could also pave the way for breakthroughs in wireless and detection technologies while supporting development in remote regions.
Testing ground for future technologies
General Dagvin Anderson, Commander of AFRICOM, described the initiative as a “game-changing opportunity for U.S. and African defense industries, as well as academic institutions, to innovate and develop solutions tailored to emerging challenges.”
The first real-world application of AMTEC’s capabilities will be demonstrated during African Lion 2027, an annual joint military exercise hosted in Morocco. Already a testing ground for advanced technologies, the exercise will serve as a proof of concept for the future center’s operational integration.
A hub for African defense transformation
By combining training, innovation, and interoperability, AMTEC is poised to become a cornerstone of Africa’s defense modernization. Its focus on adaptable, scalable solutions ensures relevance across diverse operational contexts, while its collaborative approach strengthens partnerships between African and Western nations.
