Togo inaugurates new era in higher education with University of Datcha leadership

Datcha University marks a significant milestone in Togo’s academic landscape. The government has officially appointed Professor Essohanam Batchana as its inaugural president, steering the institution through its formative years in the Plateaux Region.

Strategic leadership to shape the future of higher learning

Professor Batchana, a distinguished historian specializing in political history and international relations, brings extensive academic leadership experience. Previously serving as Director of Academic Affairs and Registrar at the University of Lomé, his deep understanding of university operations will be instrumental in establishing the new university’s administrative and academic framework.

He will be joined by Professor Kperkouma Walla, a renowned botanist and plant ecology expert, who has been named the first vice-president. Together, this academic duo will lay the groundwork for the institution’s scientific, pedagogical, and administrative foundations.

Addressing educational pressures and fostering regional development

The creation of the University of Datcha, approved in September 2023, seeks to tackle two critical challenges in Togo’s higher education sector:

• Alleviating campus congestion: Reducing the overwhelming student population at existing universities in Lomé and Kara.
• Boosting local economic growth: Aligning academic programs with the Plateaux Region’s economic, social, and cultural needs.
