Tchad’s first museum night celebrates cultural heritage with vibrant performances
In a landmark celebration of cultural preservation, the Maison des patrimoines culturels du Tchad, through its Musée national du Tchad in N’Djamena, hosted the country’s inaugural Nuit des Musées on May 18, 2026, aligning with the International Museum Day.
As dusk settled, the museum transformed into a lively hub of tradition and artistry. Upon arrival, guests were greeted by the Ballet national du Tchad, whose vibrant traditional dances set the tone for an evening steeped in national heritage. The performances offered an instant glimpse into the depth and diversity of Tchadian dance, captivating visitors from the moment they stepped inside.
« Witnessing the rich traditions of our country come alive through dance is truly breathtaking. I’ve barely begun exploring the museum’s treasures, yet I’m already overwhelmed by the talent and history on display, » shared Anne Marie-Thérèse, a first-time attendee, her voice brimming with admiration.
The night unfolded across multiple curated zones, inviting guests to explore the museum’s permanent exhibits at their leisure. A dynamic lineup of activities awaited, including guided tours spotlighting ancient artifacts, captivating storytelling sessions led by griots and museum guides, and screenings of documentaries that shed light on both tangible and intangible Tchadian heritage. Live artistic performances punctuated the evening, further enriching the cultural immersion.
Mbaibaidoh John Innocent, director of the Ballet national du Tchad, emphasized the transformative potential of the event. « Our traditional dances are more than art—they are living records of our history. Tonight, we adorned the stage with objects from our ancestors’ daily lives, offering a tangible connection to the past. We hope this event becomes an annual tradition, perhaps even three times a year, to ensure our cultural legacy thrives for generations to come, » he reflected.
International recognition was evident, with the French ambassador to Chad and his delegation present, underscoring the global significance of efforts to safeguard and promote Tchadian cultural heritage.
