Senegal politics: APR accuses government of orchestrating political witch-hunt in Touba

Following the detention of Pape Malick Ndour, coordinator of the Alliance for the Republic (APR), a high-level delegation from the party’s Republican Convergence wing met with Serigne Mountakha Mbacké in Touba. The gathering intensified debates on justice, governance, and political accountability in Senegal.

The APR delegation, led by spokespersons including Bocar Diongue, presented what they describe as a deliberate campaign against their party. They emphasized that Ndour’s detention stems not from judicial evidence but from a politically motivated strategy targeting former officials of the previous administration.

APR rejects judicial claims, cites timeline of Prodac report

According to the APR, the financial inspection report cited in Ndour’s case dates back to 2018—before his appointment as coordinator of the Community Agricultural Land Program (Prodac) in 2019. The party insists that Ndour had no involvement in the mismanagement allegations and was unjustly imprisoned.

The APR leadership framed Ndour’s case as part of a broader pattern. They cited several other APR members—including Farba Ngom, Mansour Faye, and Moustapha Diop—who were previously detained without substantial evidence. In their view, these prosecutions reflect a systemic effort to sideline the party from political influence.

Government accused of weaponizing justice against opposition

The APR delegation did not mince words in blaming Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko for what they call a coordinated judicial assault. Bocar Diongue declared, « Ousmane Sonko is behind every one of these imprisonments. We denounce this openly, and we will fight on regardless of the cost. »

Following the meeting in Touba, the delegation proceeded to Thiénaba, where they met with Serigne Assane Seck, the General Khalife of the Thiénaba Brotherhood. During the visit, prayers were offered for Ndour’s release, and a message of unwavering support was delivered to the detained former minister.
