Tchad: civic movement urges mass protest against growing dictatorship

The civil society coalition Wakit Tama has intensified its calls for a peaceful national mobilization scheduled for May 16, 2026, to denounce what it describes as an escalating authoritarian drift under President Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno’s administration.

During a press briefing in N’Djamena, the movement’s spokesperson, Abdelazim Mht Abakar, accused the government of systematically weaponizing state institutions—particularly the judiciary—to silence political opponents and suppress dissent. The coalition highlighted the recent eight-year prison sentences handed to eight political leaders from the GCAP coalition as a prime example of this trend, condemning the verdicts as both unjust and politically motivated.

Wakit Tama demands immediate release of detained leaders

The movement reiterated its demand for the unconditional release of all political prisoners, including former Prime Minister Succès Masra and other detained activists. Wakit Tama condemned the silence of both domestic and international human rights organizations, accusing them of failing to hold authorities accountable for alleged systematic rights violations.

Abdelazim Mht Abakar emphasized that the people of Chad are not seeking special privileges but rather justice, freedom, dignity, and respect for fundamental rights. The coalition has framed the upcoming protest as a defining moment for reclaiming democratic freedoms and challenging what it calls a culture of impunity.

Journalists praised as defenders of truth amid repression

During the briefing, Wakit Tama acknowledged the vital role of Chadian journalists, who continue to document abuses despite facing harassment, censorship, and intimidation. The movement described the press as the last line of defense against misinformation and historical erasure, calling for solidarity with media professionals.

The coalition’s leadership warned that international partners’ complacency risks emboldening further repression. Wakit Tama has urged global actors to actively monitor the situation and pressure authorities to uphold democratic norms.

Nationwide call to action

The May 16 mobilization, the movement asserts, will send a clear message to the regime: the Chadian people refuse to live under a system that confiscates freedoms, spreads fear, and institutionalizes injustice. Organizers have called for widespread participation, framing the protest as a collective stand for dignity and the rule of law.
