Taiwan halts visa processing for Moroccan citizens over reciprocity concerns

Taiwan has temporarily suspended the processing of visa applications for citizens of Morocco in response to what it terms a reciprocal measure. This decision follows reports that Moroccan authorities have halted the issuance of visa confirmation letters for Taiwanese travelers worldwide.

According to Taiwanese foreign ministry officials, Moroccan embassies—including the one in Japan—have recently informed travel agencies in Taiwan that visa confirmations for Moroccan nationals are no longer being processed. This move has disrupted travel plans and bilateral exchanges between the two regions.

In retaliation, Taiwan announced on Friday that it would cease accepting visa applications from Moroccan citizens, with the exception of special cases requiring prior authorization. The Taiwanese government has urged Moroccan authorities to reinstate practical travel arrangements and stated it would continue monitoring visa policies before considering further actions.

It’s worth noting that Morocco does not officially recognize Taiwan, adhering instead to the principle of a «one China» policy and maintaining formal diplomatic ties with the People’s Republic of China. The two governments have no official diplomatic relations.
