Sonko urges reform of the African Parliamentary Union during meeting with Lukonde

During the 85th executive committee session of the African Parliamentary Union (APU), Ousmane Sonko, President of the National Assembly, welcomed Jean-Michel Sama Lukonde Kyenge, Chairperson of the APU’s executive committee, for a working discussion this Thursday, June 4th.

The meeting centered on the union’s role, structural challenges, and strategies to enhance its effectiveness amid growing continental pressures. Sonko presented a series of proposals aimed at streamlining the APU’s operations to boost its influence on Africa’s political and institutional landscape.

Among his key recommendations was a call for structural reform to align the union’s functions more closely with contemporary governance needs. He emphasized the necessity of synchronizing the APU’s resolutions with those of the African Union to foster greater cohesion across pan-African institutions.

The Senegalese parliament leader stressed that such reforms would not only reinforce the APU’s relevance but also strengthen its capacity to address shared challenges facing the continent.
