Niamey, the capital of Niger, became the focal point of regional diplomacy this past Wednesday, July 8, as the second round of high-level talks between foreign ministers of the Sahel Alliance (AES) and Russia took place. The meeting brought together key representatives, including Niger’s Foreign Minister Bakary Yaou Sangaré, Mali’s Abdoulaye Diop, Burkina Faso’s Karamoko Jean Marie Traoré, and Russia’s Sergueï Lavrov.
This gathering marked another milestone in the evolving partnership between the AES and Russia, with discussions centered on deepening collaboration across multiple fronts. According to Mali’s Foreign Minister Diop, the ongoing exchanges between the AES and Russia have yielded tangible outcomes, particularly in bolstering military cooperation and fostering economic and trade ties under a shared diplomatic vision.
The ministers underscored the urgency of enhancing joint counterterrorism efforts, calling for stronger military coordination to fortify the operational capabilities of the AES Unified Force. They also emphasized the importance of economic collaboration as outlined in the AES’s Second-Year Roadmap, aiming to drive sustainable growth and stability in the region.
Russia’s top diplomat, Sergueï Lavrov, reaffirmed Moscow’s commitment to a mutually advantageous partnership with the AES. In his remarks, he highlighted Russia’s unwavering support for both the region’s security initiatives and sustainable development goals, emphasizing the importance of improving the well-being of local populations.
This latest session follows the inaugural AES-Russia consultations held in Moscow in April 2025, part of Russia’s ongoing diplomatic outreach across Africa. The momentum from these meetings reflects a broader strategic alignment, positioning the AES and Russia for closer collaboration in the months ahead.
