Ousmane Sonko has been relieved of his duties as Senegal’s Prime Minister and head of government.

The announcement was made live on national television by President Bassirou Diomaye Faye himself. This marks the end of a turbulent chapter between the two political figures.

The decision also means the dissolution of the entire government, including all ministers and deputy ministers.

Ousmane Sonko took to social media shortly after the announcement, expressing relief with a brief message: “Alhamdoulillah. Tonight, I will sleep soundly at Keur Gorgui.”

The removal of Ousmane Sonko from the Prime Minister’s office also triggers the dissolution of the Republic’s government. The Presidency has confirmed that a new Prime Minister will be appointed, and a fresh government will be formed in the coming days.

President Bassirou Diomaye Faye’s rise to power in 2024 was strongly backed by Ousmane Sonko. Despite being barred from running, Sonko threw his support behind Faye, campaigning vigorously on his behalf. The election concluded in a single round with Faye securing over 54% of the vote.
